The Australian Government has required a Melbourne nursing home to appoint a nurse adviser – for the next six months – to improve clinical care and train staff at the 60-resident facility – as part of a range of tough measures. The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency identified potential concerns with 30 accreditation outcomes out of a possible 44. This includes health and clinical care, nutrition and hydration, continence management, mobility and rehabilitation, infection control, catering and cleaning. Last night (September 2), residents and family members at Patricia Gladwell Aged Care Home, a 45-high care and 15-low care nursing home in Brunswick were officially advised the home had been put under sanction by the Department of Health and Ageing.
There was no disguising the generosity of those attending the recent Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) annual charity masquerade ball, which raised almost $20 000 for the Australian Red Cross. ‘Last year we raised more than $16 000 for charity which was donated to the National Ovarian Cancer Network. This year we broke that record with the support from our sponsors and some generous auction bidders,’ a departmental spokesman said. Funds raised at the event included money from ticket sales and the proceeds of a silent auction of items donated by celebrity supporters of the Australian Red Cross. Also up for auction was merchandise and services from Canberra and interstate businesses.
Courtesy: Washington Times FEIN: A genocide inquiry? Bruce Fein COMMENTARY: Bosnia has its Radovan Karadzic, Sudan has its Omar Bashir and the United States could have its Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. He is a United States citizen serving as Sri Lanka's Sinhala Buddhist defense secretary who may be complicit in an ongoing genocide against Sri Lanka's Tamils. While Mr. Rajapaksa enjoys a presumption of innocence, the United States should be investigating to ensure it is as scrupulous in genocide enforcement as is expected of foreign governments.

In 1983, during the Black July, I had two kids. One was 4 years old and the other one was only 6 months old. We bought a house in Mount Lavinia in 1981. And we continued to live there. A friend of ours informed us that there were some problems in Borella [on July 24th]. But we didn’t take this seriously; we never imagined that it would end up like this. [On July] 25th morning, I stayed at home because of this information. They imposed a curfew by 1:30pm which was announced on the radio. By 1:40pm, some of the houses on the other street burning. And on the radio, they announced that there are lot of disturbances in the city and that the government would bring in civil law to quieten the situation – but it was not correct.

Sri Lankan Government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam should submit to democratic processes & Rule of Law said Australian Foreign Minister Hon Stephen Smith MP in a response to a question raised in Narangaba Community Cabinet Meeting. Recently, Despite determined lobbying by Sri Lanka during and prior to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the stark history of gross rights violations by Sri Lanka Security forces, the unfolding ground situation including the exit of International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) from rights monitoring from the island, and intense lobbying by several Rights organization including three Peace Nobel laureates, have led to the ignominous defeat of Sri Lanka Wednesday in securing the sought after coveted spot in the Human Rights Council of the UN.
