Sri Lanka : Tamil men in Canada walk to correct 'errorism'

d_o_errorism02.jpgA group of eight Tamil men are taking their fight for social equality to the streets walking to Ottawa from Toronto to "stop errorism."  Errorism, as described by walk organizer Mayuran Rhaashivam, is when "a majority community uses stigmatized terms to bully a minority community for its own self interests." The walk began on May 22 from Nathan Phillips Square and is due to be completed June 11 on Parliament Hill. "We want to raise awareness about the Sri Lankan conflict with Tamil Eelam," says Mr. Rhassshivam. "As people of Tamil descent living in Canada... we feel that there is a need to get our identity out."

Rights groups want UN to monitor Sri Lanka abuses

Alarmed by the scale of abuses in Sri Lanka, not just in the northeastern war theatre but also in capital Colombo, human rights groups are advocating UN intervention. Prodded by their Sri Lankan counterparts, global rights groups are concluding that only the UN can bring some sanity in a country where killings, kidnappings, forced recruitment and other violations are rampant. The worst sufferers of the lawlessness are civilians, particularly Tamils both in the troubled northeastern region and also elsewhere in the island nation, the activists say.

Sri Lanka - Negotiable peace, but non-negotiable war By: Professor Karthigesu Sivathamby

The urgent need of negotiating a political solution for Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict by establishing a consensus between the southern parties on a devolution package to be offered the Tamils is a refrain among pro-government slogan shouters. However, it is obvious such rhetoric is meant only for the South Asian and international communities. The chorus for domestic consumption is very different – it is all about winning the war militarily.A factor that lies at the root of the many variables that affect the presidency of Mahinda Rajapakse is his penchant to have as his senior decision-makers, officials who owe no allegiance to parliament for their appointments. They are his personal loyalists.
