Make an investment in the future of our nation & watch our nation grow During the last 25 years of civil war, poverty, seasonal flooding and the tsunami, the children of the war-affected North-East of Sri Lanka have been impacted significantly. In addition, malnutrition, lack of education and uncertainty has heightened the situation. Without constant care, assistance and nurturing, the children may succumb to the war, disease and acute malnutrition.
TRO Sri Lanka maintains 19 children’s homes throughout the Northeast for children who have lost one or both parents, have been abandoned by their families, or have been displaced. Trained caregivers – chosen by TRO – look after the children and make sure they receive the best care possible. The children’s homes provide shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, and access to education at government schools. TRO Australia fully supports two of these homes, namely Gurukulam with 520 girls and Gandhi Illam with 180 boys. TRO has also undertaken the responsibility to find sponsors for the children living in these homes and provide adequate funding for maintenance of the homes. Currently there are 289 sponsors form Australia sponsoring 332 children.
In any generation and in any community, children are considered to be the future. Their naivety, joy and endless spirit create an atmosphere of happiness and contentment to which they are entitled. However, the fight for their most basic human rights, whether it is civil and political, or economic, social and cultural – all indivisible and interrelated – will impair on their ability to reach their full potential. While they have more to life, and they have more chances… we can only provide the open door to have hope.
The present upsurge of violence has also made the situation more critical, the bombing of an orphanage building which killed 52 children and the increased tightening of aid materials into the North-East of Sri Lanka. As children are being deprived of their bare necessities, the best way to change a child's life is to change the world in which they live. In addition, the best way to change their world is to help their community to build a self-sufficient and sustainable environment in the long-term.
Make a difference and assist a home. It will not only bring a smile to their face. It will change their life too.
The funds raised are used to • maintain homes and provide dormitory facilities; • develop life skills; and provide food, water and clothing; • Provide personnel developments and entertainments • provide primary school and secondary education;
